Australian youngster Alexei Popyrin is out of the Stockholm Open after going down in straight sets to Denis Shapovalov.

The exciting, fourth-seeded Canadian edged out his fellow 20-year-old 6-4 7-6 (7-3) to book his spot in the quarter-finals.

Popyrin uncharacteristically struggled on his own serve, sending down just two aces and won just 67 per cent of his first serve points compared to 92 per cent by Shapovalov.

Elsewhere, Italian top seed Fabio Fognini was dumped out 6-1 6-1 by wily Serbian Janko Tipsarevic.

Spainiard Pablo Carreno Busta beat Gianluca Mager of Italy 6-3 7-6 (7-2) and Yuichi Sugita of Japan defeated Stefano Travaglia 7-6 (8-6) 6-4.
