Snitzel Takes His Place Beside The Greats

Thursday, 1 August 2019: Snitzel has joined the breeding icons Star Kingdom, Bletchingly, Sir Tristram and Danehill as the only stallions to win three consecutive Australian General Sires' titles in the past 60 years.

Snitzel's sire, the late Redoute's Choice, also won three titles across a nine-year period in 2006, 2010 and 2014. His legacy grows as less than six months after his death he has won his first Australian Broodmares Sires' title with his descendants earning $23.2 million.

Arrowfield supremo John Messara is understandably gratified by the premiership results.

"Our overwhelming feeling about Redoute's Choice, past the grief of losing him, is gratitude for all that he gave us and all that he left us to go on with," Messsra said.

"Snitzel is a very large part of that legacy and we're so proud of him and so excited about what still lies ahead of him.

"Snitzel boasts a compelling record in marquee Group 1 races such as the Cox Plate, Golden Slipper, TJ Smith, Galaxy, Oakleigh Plate, All Aged, Golden Rose and Sires Produce.

"These are races that owners dream about winning and Snitzel can make those dreams come true – his sons and daughters have already won them all."

The 2018/19 Australian Sires' Championship continues Arrowfield Stud's domination of the title with six wins by resident sires Redoute's Choice and Snitzel since 2006.

Snitzel closed out the 2018/19 season with 180 winners of 290 races for earnings of $24,267,820, almost $7 million clear of runner-up I Am Invincible (184 winners of 301 races).

Snitzel's results since 2016 sets him apart from the majority of Australia's Champion Sires, even Redoute's Choice.

He has sired 367 individual winners of 870 races, including 87 stakes wins, 10 of them at Group 1 level.

His 49 individual stakeswinners include 30 Group winners. Among them are Australian Champion Sprinter and two-time Everest hero Redzel, Champion 3YO Colt Trapeze Artist and Champion 2YO Estijaab.

His 68 2YO winners include 15 2YO stakeswinners and two G1 winners with his progeny earning almost $70 million prizemoney.

Snitzel has set a new standard for prizemoney, being the first and only Australian stallion to breach the $20 million in one season mark twice.

His best figures for stakes wins (43 in 2017/18) & 2YO winners (32 in 2016/17) remain all-time records and his best tally of stakeswinners (26) achieved in both 2016/17 and 2017/18) equalled Danehill's 15-year record before I am Invincible surpassed it this year.

Snitzel's career and three premiership victories are all the more remarkable because he is competing against arguably the strongest group of stallions ever assembled in Australia.

There are five past Champion Sires with eight titles between them behind him on the top 20 list for 2018/19 - Street Cry (3rd), Fastnet Rock (4th), Redoute's Choice (9th), Lonhro (12th) and Exceed and Excel (14th).

The top 20 Australian based sires have also become a more dominant group since the turn of the century.

In 2000/01 their progeny won 28.9% of Australia's Group and Listed races but in 2018/19 that figure had grown to 40.9%.

Everest hero Redzel has been Snitzel's leading earner in all three premiership seasons but completing the 2018 Everest quinella with Trapeze Artist showed that his success is not dependent on a single star.

Trapeze Artist subsequently added a fourth G1 victory to his own record when he set a track record in the Canterbury Stakes before retiring as Snitzel's second-highest earner son with $5.5 million.

Among his 2YOs this season Exhilarates won the $2 million 2019 Magic Millions 2YO Classic at the Gold Coast. Already a two-time Champion Sire of 2YOs, Snitzel's 23 juvenile winners also included G3 winner Bella Rosa and the Listed winner Cheer Leader and Bavella, a Listed winner in New Zealand.

Snitzel's ten other Australian stakeswinners in 2018/19 were headed by Group-winning sprinters I Am Excited, Showtime and his 90th worldwide stakeswinner Irithea.

In the sale ring Snitzel's yearlings have realised $107 million in total sales since 2017 and include 18 seven-figure yearlings.

Among them were Golden Slipper winner Estijaab and Australia's top-priced yearling of 2019, the Corumbene Stud bred colt out of Ichihara bought by James Harron for $2.8 million at the Easter Sale in Sydney.

Arrowfield's confidence in Snitzel was evident when the stud paid $1.7 million for dual G1 winner Norzita in foal to him, at the Chairman's Sale in May while David Redvers and Widden Stud paid $1.2 million for Listed winner Bonny O'Reilly, also in foal to Snitzel, at the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale.
