Australian surfer Julian Wilson has been made to wait another day for his shot at a maiden world title at the season ending Pipe Masters in Hawaii.

World Surf League organisers announced the first round heats would be delayed at least one more day due to strong winds and stormy conditions at Pipeline.

"Day 2 of the window for the Billabong Pipe Masters and we have stormy, massive conditions out there with really strong winds," World Surf League Deputy Commissioner Renato Hickel said.

"We are calling competition off for the day. We are going to check again tomorrow. There is a small chance of running the event tomorrow, but we will be checking at 7:30 am local time."

Event officials will make another call on whether to resume competition on Tuesday at 0430 AEDT.

World No.2 Wilson sits on 51,450 points, level with Felipe Toledo and just 4750 points behind leader Gabriel Medina, after 11 events.

Wilson would be crowned world champion with a victory at the famous Banzai Pipeline surf break but a place in the final would also hand him the title if Medina fails to make the semi-finals and Toledo does not win the event.
