Comeback win has Boomers believing

Friday, 19 January 2018:

Melbourne Boomers coach Guy Molloy says his side have the belief to go on and win the WNBL championship after a dramatic come-from-behind win over the Townsville Fire.

With their season slipping away and trailing by 14 points on Thursday, the Boomers turned up the aggression on defence and leaned on the offensive talents of Liz Cambage to level the best-of-three series with a memorable 58-57 victory.

"We knew what we wanted to run and where the ball had to go," Molloy said after the league's leading scorer produced eight of her team-high 19 points in the final three and a half minutes.

Despite another off night with 3-of-18 shooting from three-point range, the Boomers held on after Suzy Batkovic, fresh off winning her sixth MVP award, missed a final-second shot that would have won the title for Townsville.

"We didn't get it all right even in that last possession so I wasn't happy that Suzy got a good look at a shot," Molloy said.

"That could have been a hero play for her to win a championship on the buzzer."

Cambage (19 points, nine rebounds) was excited by the way the Boomers fought back to win after overcoming another nervous start.

"I honestly think in the first six quarters of this series, it hasn't been us," Cambage said.

"In that second half, I think we finally came alive and showed everyone what our game looks like.

"We were finally playing aggressive and that's been missing."

Cambage believes that a repeat performance in Sunday's deciding game three would result in the Boomers claiming their second championship in club history.

"I think if we carry that aggression and our team game back up to Townsville and play that way again, we can bring it home - we can get it done."
