Thursday, 31 August 2017: The late Zabeel’s status as one of Australasia’s greatest sires has been enhanced by his son Savabeel being crowned New Zealand’s champion sire for the third time.

Deceased in 2015, Zabeel has been represented by 1106 winners from 1524 starters recording a massive 3740 wins and earning over $189 million.
With his last crop now four-year-olds Zabeel’s black type scoreboard reads 163 stakes winners including 47 G1 winners, 29 G2 and 35 G3.
He is equal sixth with Danzig and Mr. Prospector on the world list of sires by G1 winners and is second most successful among Australasian sires.
On top for G1 winners in both Australasia and globally is the late Danehill with 89. Danehill left 49 G1 winners from his time at stud in Australia.

Zabeel

The offspring of Zabeel have won a total of 90 G1 races, among them the Auckland Cup five times, AJC Derby (4), Melbourne Cup (3), Cox Plate (3), Australian Guineas (3), NZ Derby (3), Sydney Cup (2), Adelaide Cup (2), Caulfield Cup (2), NZ Oaks, ATC Oaks, Queensland Oaks (4), Hong Kong Cup, Dubai Sheema Classic and South African Derby.
His most memorable performers include Octagonal (10 G1 wins, Australian Horse of the Year), Might And Power (7 G1 wins, Australian Horse of the Year), Savabeel (Cox Plate, Spring Champion Stakes), Sky Heights (AJC Derby, Caulfield Cup, Rosehill Guineas), Efficient (Melbourne Cup, Victoria Derby) and Jezabeel (Auckland Cup, Melbourne Cup).
Zabeel’s titles include Champion NZ sire by earnings four times, champion NZ broodmare sire five times, champion Australian sire twice by earnings and leading Australian broodmare sire three times.
He now has only three of his sons listed at stud in NZ in 2017 (Savabeel, Zed, Verdi) and one in Australia (Reset).
Reset, who went to stud unbeaten in five starts including the G1 Australian Guineas and G1 Futurity Stakes, has sired over 380 winners with 31 successful in stakes races including G1 winners Fawkner, Rebel Raider, Pinker Pinker, Hauraki and Set Square.
Zabeel is also one of the southern hemisphere’s top broodmare sires, his daughters being responsible for 1178 winners of 5446 races and over $215 million.
Among them are 174 stakes winners, 107 at Group level including 36 in G1 races. Sires at stud out of Zabeel mares include Darci Brahma, Dundeel, Alpine Eagle, Xtravagant and Ready For Victory.
