Adam Scott admits he's not at his best but that hasn't stopped him from charging to a share of second at the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines.

The former world No.1, now ranked 23, moved from 14th after the first round to be just a shot behind Norwegian leader Viktor Hovland.

Starting on the back nine, world No. 14 Hovland birdied five of his first nine holes en route to a 65.

Backing up his opening 67, Scott posted a 69 in tough conditions on the challenging South Course to sit in a group of six golfers, including world No.2 Spaniard Jon Rahm.

Fellow Australian Marc Leishman, who is defending his San Diego title, is in a tie for 29th but Jason Day, Cameron Smith and Aaron Baddeley all missed the cut.

In only his second appearance at Torrey Pines, after finishing second in 2019, Scott looked right at home despite the overnight rain, strong winds and icy temperatures.

Scott said he felt he was playing solid - and hoped spectacular wasn't far off.

"I feel like things are in a good spot and obviously I'm playing OK," the 40-year-old said.

"I play fairly solid every week I play, it's just those small margins I think that have been missing and they take some consistency to accumulate and push you up to that top level.

"I'm probably slightly underprepared for where I want to be, but I'm working on that."

Scott moved to nine under with an eagle on the sixth hole - his 15th hole of the day - but followed up with two bogies.

He ended the round with a seven-foot birdie putt.

Failing to finish better than T22 in three majors last year and battling coronavirus in October, Scott said nailing his swing was key to securing his first title in almost a year.

"The swing, although there's been lots of good ones, there's just a couple loose ones coming in," he said.

"Almost every round I've played this year it's been like that. I think I'm nearly getting there.

"If I do that, I think I'll be in with a shot.

"I'd like to take advantage of the next two days given the position I've put myself in - it's been a little while since I've kind of been right up there heading into weekends."
