Cam Gannon aims to end WA's Shield drought

Monday, 29 June 2020:

Paceman Cameron Gannon has set his sights on helping Western Australia end their Sheffield Shield drought - even if it is not him taking the bulk of the wickets.

Gannon was the Shield's leading wicket taker last summer, snaring 38 scalps at an average of 20.92 for the Queensland Bulls.

The lure of a three-year deal with WA was too hard to resist for the 31-year-old, who jumped at the chance to make the WACA Ground his new home.

The Warriors have not won a Shield title since 1998/99, and they hope the addition of Gannon will be the final piece of the puzzle needed to lift the trophy again.

"It's been a while for Western Australia, and I would really love to be able to contribute to ending that," Gannon said.

"But it takes an awful amount of luck to make a Shield final and to win a Shield final.

"So there's a lot of factors that go into it. I'm just hoping to do my best and contribute as much as I can."

Gannon's individual success last summer turned him into hot property.

But he insists he does not judge himself on how many wickets he takes.

"For me, one of my focal points as a bowler is to make sure I'm giving nothing away so the guy at the other end can then take wickets," Gannon said.

"That's one of the only stats that I really track - not so much wickets that I take, but wickets that fall while I'm bowling."

Gannon joins a powerful pace unit that also features the likes of Jason Behrendorff, Jhye Richardson, Matt Kelly, David Moody, and Cameron Green.

Behrendorff is not expected to be available for red-ball cricket until the back-half of the Shield season, while Richardson is aiming to return from his latest shoulder surgery in December during the Big Bash League.
