Supercars' Bathurst finale in jeopardy

Thursday, 11 June 2020:

Supercars' plans for a championship finale at Bathurst in February appear destined for the scrapheap with a revised calendar imminent.

Supercars revealed a reorganised calendar in May with the 2020 season to extend into the new year and a second event at Mount Panorama wrapping up the championship from February 5 to 7.

However teams, drivers and broadcasters have found it difficult to negotiate contracts around the dates and a new calendar is set to be announced next week which will wrap up the championship in December.

In a statement, the championship confirmed talks over the revised calendar had been ongoing since its release.

"These times are unprecedented for our sport, which is why we have to remain flexible with our calendar arrangements and if required, we will make significant changes," a Supercars spokesperson said.

If the plans to race into the new year are abandoned, a series finale under lights at Sydney Motorsport Park in December is an option being discussed.

Supercars added the dates for the Bathurst 1000 from October 8 to 11 will remain unchanged.

It's unclear what would happen to the penultimate round in New Zealand, which is scheduled for January 9-10 at this stage, if the December finale is selected.

The Sydney Motorsport Park event would replace the scheduled event at Sandown, which will most likely be shifted to a new date.

The 2020 Supercars championship resumes at Sydney Motorsport Park on June 27.
