Australian Open day five snapshot

Friday, 24 January 2020:

PLAYER OF THE DAY: Coco Gauff. The 15 year-old beat defending champion Naomi Osaka in a major boilover. It followed China's Wang Qiang's stunning three-set win over seven-times champion Serena Williams which blew the top half of the draw wide open.

STAT OF THE DAY: Defending men's champion Novak Djokovic is into the second week of a grand slam for the 50th time following his straight-sets dispatch of Yoshihito Nishioka.

QUOTE OF THE DAY: "I am just a better actress, as I always say now. I'm no happier than I was 10 years ago. But I just have to pretend like I don't want to punch the wall, but in reality I do." - Williams conceding the losses still sting even at 38.

TOURNAMENT SUMMARY: World No.1 Ashleigh Barty is the new women's title favourite following Williams' exit and her own impressive straight-sets win over Elena Rybakina. Seventh seed Petra Kvitova remains a threat after following Barty into the last 16, but 10th seed Madison Keys joined Williams on the scrapheap with a shock loss to Maria Sakkari.
