Time is ticking for outstanding sprinting mare

Friday, 24 January 2020: Another shot at the Group 1 The Galaxy is on the agenda for outstanding sprinting mare In Her Time as her racing career winds down.

In Her Time   is back in work at Broadmeadow after spending a regulatory month in quarantine (a fortnight in Hong Kong and the same in Melbourne) after an unsuccessful trip to Hong Kong, where she was a race morning withdrawal by stewards from the International Sprint (1200m) at Sha Tin when a veterinary inspection deemed her to be lame in the near foreleg.

"It was very unfortunate because an abscess burst in her foot, and she was fine again in relatively no time," trainer Kris Lees said this morning.

"She has come through her quarantine period really well and provided there are no hiccups, The Galaxy looks a logical target."

In Her Time, now a seven-year-old and in her final racing season before being retired to stud, has won nine races and been placed eight times from 27 starts and earned just over $3.7m in stakes.

Two of those wins have been at Group 1 level – the 2018 The Galaxy (1100m) at Rosehill Gardens and last year's VRC Lightning Stakes (1000m) at Flemington – when she was resuming on both occasions.

With better fortune, In Her Time's record would be even more impressive as she also registered six Group 1 placings.

The $700,000 The Galaxy (1100m) will be run at the Golden Slipper Stakes meeting at Rosehill on March 21.

Meanwhile, Lees has three runners (all resuming) at his home track meeting at Newcastle tomorrow and a further three at the Australia Day public holiday meeting at Warwick Farm on Monday.

Vive Marie (apprentice Louise Day) and Dundee Lee (Andrew Gibbons) both contest the Benchmark 64 Handicap (1200m) at Newcastle, and Blazing Sunrise (Gibbons) runs in the Class 1 Handicap (1400m).

"Vive Marie and Dundee Lee will be better for the run and Blazing Sunrise   is going well, but will also improve as he gets to 1600m or a bit beyond," Lees said.

A three-year-old by Dawn Approach, Blazing Sunrise has a win and three placings to date from only four starts.

Following a stylish Grafton Maiden (1730m) victory on September 23, he nearly upset the well-regarded Profit in a 3YO Handicap (1800m) at Eagle Farm on October 5 before spelling.

Lees has decided to put an off side blinker on Mr Garcia   (Jason Collett) for Monday's Listed Australia Day Cup (2400m) at Warwick Farm.'

"He has been laying in in his races," Lees explained. "The gear change has helped correct this in trackwork, and hopefully it will be the same in this race.

"Mr Garcia is on trial at the distance, but is racing well and probably won't get a better chance to manage it."

Iconic Star (Brenton Avdulla) goes to town for the Benchmark 70 Handicap (1000m) after leading throughout when successful first-up in a Class 3 Handicap (1000m) at Taree on January 13.

"It's a big jump in class, but she is a sharp filly who has trained on well since," Lees said.

Stable apprentice Louise Day claims 3kg on Chilly Cha Cha (now 58.5kg) for her resumption in the Benchmark 70 Handicap (1400m).

"She is in good order and her last trial at Wyong was good, but will definitely be better for this run," Lees said.
