Shooter Adams on target to make Tokyo 2020

Thursday, 16 January 2020:

Paul Adams is on the cusp of sealing a return to the Olympic Games, having overcome wet and windy conditions to win another final and cap a dominant week at Australia's skeet shooting selection trials.

Adams secured his country a Tokyo Olympics quota spot with victory at last year's Oceania championships.

That was only half the battle for the Queenslander, who finished 19th in 2016 at the Rio Games.

The 27-year-old was thrust into a selection showdown spanning four events, with a shooter's top-three scores counting towards Olympic selection.

Lake Macquarie hosted two of the four events this week and Adams won gold at both, putting him in the box seat to represent Australia at the 2020 Games.

Having shot 57 of 60 targets in Tuesday's Commonwealth championships final, Adams backed it up by putting down 53 targets to win Thursday's national championships final ahead of Luke Argiro (48/60).

Adams, who works as a registered nurse in Queensland, has celebrated the achievement by jumping in the car and starting the nine-hour drive home to Redcliffe.

"I should get home by about midnight ... I was a bit worried at the start of the week that it could be a very, very long drive if I don't do too well," Adams told AAP.

"But it's nice to come away with a clean sweep. Hopefully, I can go to Melbourne and put a big score on the board."

The next selection event starts on February 27 in Melbourne.

The race to represent Australia in women's skeet at Tokyo is more tight at the halfway point.

Laura Coles won the Commonwealth championships final but had to settle for a silver medal on Thursday, when Aislin Jones put down 55 of 60 targets to win the national championships decider.

"The light rain made the conditions interesting," 19-year-old Jones said.

"I was very happy to come away with the win."
