New Supercars rules to be introduced for next season have been welcomed by the team they're designed to slow down.

DJR Team Penske has dominated the 2019 season, with Scott McLaughlin and Fabian Coulthard winning 20 of 32 races in their Ford Mustangs.

In 2020, downforce on cars will be reduced by 15 per cent and engine rebuilds will be capped at three per season to try to make races more competitive. There will also be modifications to suspension.

Coulthard, who finished fourth in the 2019 drivers' standings behind McLaughlin, embraced the changes.

"It's going to be good. I think we need it," Coulthard, 37, told AAP.

"A little bit less aero (downforce), things they're going to implement with the dampers (suspension) ... definitely, the cars are going to move around a bit more so, hopefully, we're going to have some better passing.

"The cars are so even and we're breaking so late, so every passing manoeuvre you do on a top-level guy is a 50-50 move."

On Saturday, Coulthard's two-year-old twins were at the Newcastle 500 for his third-placed finish and he said he'd keep racing until they were old enough to remember it.

"Everyone says having kids slows you down but I don't think that's factual at all," he said.

"They're too young to realise what this (podium) means at the moment.

"My dream is still to win a championship, win Bathurst, so we'll keep trying and keep pushing. I want to make my kids proud."
