Monday, 28 October 2019: The astute eye of renowned racing and breeding figure Henry Plumptre led syndicator Denise Martin to her latest success story Kubrick

Kubrick  (Shooting To Win x Alcatraz by Fastnet Rock) recorded a thrilling rails-hugging win in the inaugural $1 million Bondi Stakes at Randwick on Saturday thanks to a daring ride by Brenton Avdulla to take fore his way through a needle eye opening in the straight.

His heart stopping win was a big boost for his young sire Shooting To Win, the son of Northern Meteor who won four of his 11 starts including the G1 Caulfield Guineas and G2 Stan Fox Stakes.

With his oldest progeny only three Kubrick is among his 18 first crop winners and is proving yet another wonderful performer trained by Chris Waller for Martin's Star Thoroughbreds syndicates.

From just seven starts he has earned more than $810,000 and becomes the third winner of a million dollar race this year in the Star Thoroughbreds colours, joining Fiesta (Inglis 3YO Sprint) and Invincibella (Magic Millions Fillies & Mares), a subsequent winer of the G1 Tatt's Tiara.

Martin purchased Kubrick for $250,000 at last year's Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale but only after a wise word from Plumptre, the former Godolphin chief and now in charge of Cambridge Stud in New Zealand.

"Henry Plumptre was helping me with my yearling selections in Melbourne last year and he had a lot to do with Shooting To Win from his days at Godolphin," Martin revealed.

"He told me he had found a beautiful Shooting To Win colt at the sale and as soon as I saw him I knew I wanted him.

"He was very popular so it was nice to take him home.''

Kubrick was offered at the Premier Sale by his breeder Ross Ferris from Two Bays Farm and is the first foal to race from his dam Alcatraz.

Alcatraz is from the family of the multiple stakes winner Twiglet, the dam of G1 winners Fairy King Prawn and Easy Rocking and the stakes winner Crevette.

Shooting To Win sired three winners on Saturday with victories by Shooting Love at the Gold Coast and Testino at Yarra Valley.
