Australia T20 captain Aaron Finch is on track to play in Sunday's T20 series opener against Sri Lanka despite a recent back niggle and side strain.

Finch missed Victoria's Sheffield Shield loss to WA with the injury, but he's expected to be named in the Bushrangers' squad for Wednesday's one-dayer against the Warriors at the WACA Ground.

A final decision on his availability might not be made until the morning of the match.

Even if Finch is ruled out of the one-dayer, he is still a strong chance to captain Australia against Sri Lanka in the T20 series opener at Adelaide Oval on Sunday.

"If I can still feel it and it's a little niggle there, I think the medical staff will probably take the conservative route," Finch told Perth radio station 6PR on the weekend.

"It could be the morning of the game that that is decided, or it could be the night before.

"It started out as a little back niggle and it's just a little tear in my side. So hopefully not too long. It's been a week since I did it."

Victorian batsman Glenn Maxwell said he couldn't imagine any risks being taken on Finch for Wednesday's one-dayer if he's not ready to return.

"He does have a couple of internationals coming up where he has to captain, so he'll probably be a little bit cautious," Maxwell said.

"He seems to be moving ok. He was actually able to carry some drinks the last couple of days (in the Shield match), which was nice.

"He's just been hanging around the change room, being annoying."
