Gold Cup in his sights after latest Real Success
  Story By Michael Lee

Monday, 21 October 2019: Champion jockey Vlad Duric threw everything at Real Success inside the last 200m of the $70,000 Laughing Gravy 2016 Stakes, a Class 3 race over 1800m – including his vocal cords, on Sunday.

Duric took the raw chestnut to the front from a smothered run at the 300m, but the running action was nowhere as dynamic as he would have wished.

In his trademark style, the whip went cracking with renewed vigour, but Real Success ($15) was getting "the wanders". That's when Duric resorted to "growling" to teach the wayward gelding better racing manners.

"He's a big gangly sort and is still learning what it's all about," he said.

"I knew he had a lot on these horses, but it took a bit of riding today. He got away from the other horses but he then got the wanders.

"I had to growl at him. He was lugging in and he's not an agile horse, it was no sit-and-steer job for sure.

"He may need a set of visors to have better vision instead, we'll discuss that. This run will bring him on for the Gold Cup."

Trainer Michael Clements has pencilled in the Group 1 Dester Singapore Gold Cup (2000m) on November 10 as Real Success's ultimate goal this campaign.

With Clements in Australia, assistant-trainer Michael White certainly expressed the team's opinion that Sunday's performance had "Gold Cup" material written all over.

"We've had a lot of time for him and have always thought about putting the blinkers on him. His last race suggested he was ready, this was the right run," said White.

"They switched him on in his trials and we were confident going into the race. We're happy enough that run will get him into the Gold Cup."

Raced by the Lucky Stable, Real Success has now achieved a handy record of three wins and one second from six starts for prizemoney around the $120,000 mark.
