Hurricanes beat Stars in WBBL

Sunday, 20 October 2019:

Prized recruit Nicola Carey's all-round brilliance helped the Hobart Hurricanes complete a weekend clean sweep of the Melbourne Stars with a five-wicket win at CitiPower Centre.

After downing the Stars by 20 runs in the Saturday's first half of the double-header, the Hurricanes were in a spot of bother when they slumped to 5-73 and with the asking rate climbing in pursuit of the home side's 7-136.

But ex-Sydney Thunder superstar Carey proved simply too good, thumping an unbeaten 60 to help steer them home with nine deliveries to spare.

She had tremendous support from big-hitting South African Chloe Tryon who has yet to be dismissed in the competition, following her unbeaten 46 on Saturday with a quickfire 29 not out off 18 balls, including a towering six over mid-wicket.

The pair put on 64 unconquered off 37 balls for the sixth wicket to turn the tricky chase into a relative cake walk.

Carey had earlier done her job with the ball, snaring 2-27, while Belinda Vakarewa picked up 2-27.

Lizelle Lee (25), Mignon du Preez (23) and Emma Inglis (20) all failed to capitalise on promising starts for the Stars, which was crucial in reigning wooden spooners Hobart recording their second victory of the weekend, already matching last season's entire win tally.
