Tuesday, 15 October 2019: Coolmore had plenty to celebrate at Caulfield on Saturday with an imported Group One winner and a classy debut win by a son of first season sire Pride Of Dubai.

Pride Of Dubai's 2YO colt Tanker won the Listed Debutant Stakes for Ciaron Maher and David Eustace before Cape Of God Hope made a great start to his Australian career for the Lindsay Park stable with his upset win in the G1 Ladbrokes Caulfield Stakes.

Coolmore also had plenty of joy at Randwick when the outstanding 3YO Shadow Hero became the fifth Group One for his sire Pierro at just his fifth career start.

CAPE OF GOOD HOPE
CAPE OF GOOD HOPE
CAPE OF GOOD HOPE (Galileo x Hveger by Danehill) boasts a pedigree that demands he be given his chance at stud in Australia in future years.

That is an obvious plan as he was purchased by the Lindsay Park stable as a racing and stud prospect earlier this year with Coolmore retaining a 30 percent interest in the stallion.

Still a 3YO to Northern Hemisphere time, he would be a perfect vehicle to extend the influence in Australia of world champion sire Galileo, who has sired 1461 winners from 2139 runners including 308 at stakes level.

Lindsay Park's David Hayes was elated by the performance.

"I wish I had a bit more of a share in him now," Hayes said. "He's got one of the better pedigrees in the world.

"Now that he's a Group One winner by the best sire in the world and from one of the best female families we've really got something to work with in terms of a possible stallion career."

Cape Of Good Hope is one of 83 individual G1 winners by Galileo and his eighth in Australia, joining Linton, The United States, Niwot, Sousa, Foundry, Seville and Adelaide.

Galileo is now just one behind Danehill on the all-time list of G1-producing stallions. Cape Of Good Hope is the 15th G1 winner to be bred on the Galileo-Danehill cross.

Cape of Good Hope's dam Hveger was placed in the G1 Australasian Oaks before going to stud where she produced five winners including the international champion Highland Reel (Galileo).

His 10 wins included the G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, G1 Breeders' Cup Turf, G1 Prince of Wales's Stakes, G1 Coronation Cup, G1 Secretariat Stakes and the G1 Hong Kong Vase twice. His placings in seven othjer G1 races include the WS Cox Plate in his only appearance in Australia and the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.

Highland Reel, now standing in Australia at Swettenham Stud, is a brother to the multiple Group winner and Epsom and Irish Derby placed Idaho. A half sister Valdemoro (Encosta de Lago) was placed in the G1 VRC Oaks and G1 Vinery Stud Stakes.

Hveger is out of Marscay G1 winner Circles of Gold, dam of the G1 winners and sires Elvstroem (Danehill) and Haradasun (Fusaichi Pegasus).

Cape Of Good Hope has had 11 starts for three wins across five countries this year and came to Australia from two starts in the US.

TANKER (Pride Of Dubai x Calcatta by Tale Of The Cat) stamped himself as a colt with obvious potential when he  claim the Listed Debutant Stakes to give freshman sire Pride Of Dubai his first Australian winner.

However it was bitter sweet result for the colt's breeder Ian Smith as he revealed that Tanker's dam Calcatta died while leaving a Zoustar colt five weeks ago.

"There were complications after the birth. There was nothing we could do," Smith said.

Smith and his wife Andre run Edinburgh Park Stud, a boutique breeding farm at Taree on the NSW north coast where they bred Hong Kong champion Silent Witness.

They paid $150,000 for Calcatta, winner of two races including the Dequetteville Stakes at Morphettville as a 2YO,  at the Magic Millions Broodmare National Sale.

Tanker is her third foal coming after her second Lady Naturaliste, by Choisir, won last season's Listed Cinderella Stakes for juvenile fillies at Morphettvile.

Calcatta is a daughter of the dual Listed winner Calchris (Commands), making her a three-quarter sister to the stakes-placed Flying Cat (Tale Of The Cat) and a half-sister to Magic Millions 3YO Guineas placegetter Calculated (So You Think).

Smith retained a share in Tanker after selling the colt for $170,000 at this year's Magic Millions Yearling Sale to the Ciaron Maher/David Eustace team.

Tanker is the second winner for Pride Of Dubai after his daughter Platinum Dubai won first time out in New Zealand on September 26.

A son of Street Cry Pride Of Dubai raced five times for two wins, both at G1 level in the Blue Diamond Stakes and ATC Sires' Produce Stakes in 2015 when he became the first 2YO to win both races.

Pride Of Dubai has covered almost 500 mares in his first three seasons in Australia while his first crop of northern hemisphere foals have gone through the sale ring as yearlings this year.

SHADOW HERO (Pierro x Sookie by Casino Prince) landed the G1 Spring Champion Stakes to reaffirm his position as a short priced elect for the G1 Victoria Derby at Flemington on November 2.

The three-year-old gelding was purchased by Sweetbriar Equine for $260,000 at the Sydney Classic Yearling Sale from the Newgate Farm draft and joins Pierro's Everest runners Pierata and Arcadia Queen as well as classic winners Levendi and Pinot as Pierro's G1 winners.

Shadow Hero is trained by rising talent Mark Newnham for Sweetbriar, the racing entity of Hong Kong owner David Lui, and is the trainer's second successive Champion Stakes winner after he recorded his first G1 victory as a trainer in the race last year with the filly Maid Of Heaven.

Shadow Hero's dam Sookie was a G3 winner of four races and is a grand-daughter of the former champion 2YO filly Victory Vein (Mr Henrysee) from the unraced Encosta de Lago mare Purple Blood..

Sookie's first foal Picaro (Pierro) won four and placed in six of his 21 starts.
