Australian gymnast Tyson Bull has earned an Olympic quota spot after finishing seventh in the horizontal bars final at the artistic world championships in Germany.

Bull upped his difficulty heading into the medal round and while he had a fall, did enough to secure Australia a second berth in next year's Tokyo Olympics after Georgia Godwin did likewise in the women's all-round final.

Bull scored 13.200 in the final, which was won by Brazilian Arthur Mariano, who scored 14.9.

"I decided to take a risk and up my difficulty going into the final," the Victorian said.

It was an incredibly strong group of athletes competing and in a world championship final, I wanted to go and put it all out there."

"I'm a bit disappointed as training leading into this final had gone as smooth as it could have but that's the nature of the beast."

Bull returned to Australia to train at the Institute of Sport earlier this year having graduated from the University of Illinios.

National Performance Director Andrew Logan said despite the women's team missing Olympic qualification by one spot they were happy with the results.

"As the second last competitor, knowing the score he had to achieve, he had to increase his difficulty score and Tyson handled the pressure very well," Logan said.

"We have no doubt this experience will help in Tyson's preparation for the Olympics in 2020."
