Popular Breeder Neale Lavis Dies

Tuesday, 8 October 2019: Decorated equestrian and thoroughbred professional Neale Lavis has died at the age of 89.

Lavis, a successful stud owner and trainer, was an Australian equestrian champion and member of Australian Olympic teams at Rome and Tokyo.

He won a team gold medal and individual silver medal in eventing at the 1960 Olympics in Rome. He was also a member of the Australian equestrian team at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics.

Lavis later developed Strathallan Stud at Braidwood in southern NSW where he stood leading sire Whiskey Road and bred 1981 Melbourne Cup winner Just A Dash and 1982/83 Australian Racehorse of the Year Strawberry Road.

Lavis was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame in 1989 and received the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in 1999 and Australian Sports Medal in 2000.

The popular figure remained actively involved in racing as a breeder, owner and trainer until his latter years.
