Remy Gardner hopes he can stamp his mark on world motorcycling racing this season after claiming a maiden podium to sit second in the Moto2 championship.

The 21-year-old son of Australian great Wayne Gardner debuted in Moto3 in 2014 but it took until the weekend's round in Argentina to get on the podium, when second to championship leader Lorenzo Baldasarri of Italy.

That promising result came after he missed the podium by just 0.002s in the season-opening round in Qatar last month, having switched to the SAG team and a Kalex bike in the off-season.

"It's been a tough three or four years," Gardner said in a post-race interview for MotoGP.

"We've nearly had the podium so many times and it's just escaped me.

"Hopefully this is just the start. We've got good building blocks.

"I think I need to work on myself a little bit, on my consistency, and really nailing millimetre on the track.

"I think our package is great.

"We're missing a little bit of straight-line speed so some tracks we might suffer a little bit more than others, but we can compensate that in the corners and on brakes.

"I think just consistency is key."
