Australia's Michael Matthews has won the second stage of the Tour of Catalonia in Spain to move up to third overall in the general classification.

The Team Sunweb rider remains 2:48 seconds behind leader Thomas De Gendt on a day where four-time Tour de France winner Chris Froome suffered a nasty crash 40km from the finish.

Britain's Froome was quickly back on his bike and managed to complete the 166.7km stage from Mataro to Sant Feliu De Guixols but was 14 minutes behind Matthews.

Mitchelton-Scott's Daryl Impey finished third among a cluster of riders with the South African rising to fifth overall - 2.54min behind De Gendt.

The Lotto-Soudal rider retained the race leader's white and green jersey following his breakaway victory on stage one, with Spain's Alejandro Valverde sitting in second ahead of Matthews.
