Dream run continues for Tang
  Story By Michael Lee

Monday, 18 February 2019: Two wins from two don’t always qualify for the “next big thing” label, but My Dreamliner might well be an exception after he pulled off that feat on Friday night.

Maybe it was the feelgood aura of his comeback owner Tang Weng Fei (of Hydrocarbon and Jupiter Stable fame) that added to the hyperbole, but on face value, it would be hard not to be taken by the stellar performance of the Dream Ahead three-year-old in the $50,000 Class 4 race over 1000m.

Jumping straight onto the bunny from his wide gate, [nMy Dreamliner[/n] was in cruise mode all the way through before scooting clear at the top of the straight once apprentice jockey Iskandar Rosman gave him a slight squeeze.

Clearly in a different league, My Dreamliner went on to spreadeagle his rivals by a widening margin, bolting in by just under six lengths from Time To Rock (Benny Woodworth) who took second spot by a head from Sun Princeps (Vlad Duric).

Backed down to $7 favouritism, My Dreamliner clocked 59.16 seconds for the 1000m speed dash, 0.57 second quicker than at his debut win in a Restricted Maiden race, but it was the breathtaking manner of the second win that had most gushing about his next endeavours, with a bold call even made he could be even “better”.

“I hope he can be even better than Better Than Ever,” said Tang using his former star racehorse (he owned with Thomas Loke of Stepitup fame) who was once unbeaten in 10 runs for Laurie Laxon in the 2010s, as a benchmark.

“I thought he would be in a little bit of trouble coming to the home turn, but once he straightened up, it was game over.

“I think he can go further.”

With My Dreamliner’s win, trainer Young Keah Yong maintains a 100% strike rate with Tang given the other horse he trains for the oil businessman, Mon Energy, is also unbeaten in only one start.

“It was a very impressive win, but I don’t like to rush my new horses. I like to take my time with them,” said Young, who was associated with Tang through his days as stable supervisor to Charles Leck and assistant-trainer to Desmond Koh respectively.

“Tonight, he probably won on natural ability. He has recovered very well from his first win.”

No doubt the four-kilo allowance from Lee Freedman’s apprentice jockey Iskandar Rosman went some way towards the rout, but the Malaysian lad, who was bringing up his first riding double after landing the first race on My Gold, was just rapt he was given the chance of a joyride on such a different conveyance from what he is used to.

“Wow, he’s a really good horse, and very easy to ride,” said Iskandar, who is better known by his peers as Syafiq.

“Mr Young taught me how to ride him in the parade ring. Once he went in front from barrier 11, he controlled the race and I just tried my best.

“This is my second winner for this year. Thank you to both Mok (Zhan Lun, My Gold’s trainer) and KY Young and the owners as well.”

With that second win, My Dreamliner has already banked in more than $70,000 for Tang, with the promise of more to come in store.
