Sunday, 9 December 2018: Trial Watch Reviews of trials at Wyong (December 3) and Rosehill (December 4).

ROSEHILL December 4
Good 4; Inside Grass
16 Heats – Heats 1-2 1030m (2 Open/2Maiden); Heats 5-16 900m (5 2YO; 3 Open; 2 Maiden; 2 C1/Mdn)

ALIZEE  (James Cummings): Class mare returns for her first trial after her three month ban for a bleed at the start of her spring prep. She sat three wide off the speed but was doing it easily and worked home under no pressure for a soft second. The time was slow (55.16; 35.30) but this was a nice prep for what is expected to be a short summer campaign.
DEVACHAN  (James Cummings): First trial by this well educated Exceed And Excel filly stamped her as another smart 2YO for the Godolphin stable. Settled fourth and showed a sharp turn of foot from the 300m to quickly make up four lengths on the leader. From there she had them covered and was under no stress running to the line for a soft win, clocking almost a second quicker than the other four 2YO heats (54.05; 34.80) and her time bettered by only one other heat for the older horses. Promising.
TESSERA  (James Cummings): Had his stablemate INTUITION  on his outside for company as the pair worked strongly in the lead from the 600m and went to the line with nothing between them. Tessera was always traveling kindly well within himself while his stablemate was niggled to gain the upper hand in the latter stages with their last 600m (34.50) the equal quickest of the day. Good signs that he working back to his early form.
TAKEN EVERYTHING  (Team Hawkes): Impressive first trial by this Snitzel filly. She travelled strongly in the lead and was eager to go quicker over the last 400m with Tommy Berry happy to keep a strong lid on her speed. She put good time on the board (54.62; 35.20) to win by a soft 1.3 lengths with a lot in hand. Can only improve.
NOTED TRAILS: Sambro; So You Win; Allcash; Vulpes; Deep Chill; Twentyfour Carat; Jahbath; Deterge; Dr Kardo; Escondido; Paris; Hafaawa; Devachan; Alizee; Rodrico; Pipeline; Sure Knee; Handsome Thief; Intuition; Tessera; Outback Diva; Molly Malone; Taken Everything; Exoplanet; Hostwin Saturn; Beaufort Park; Great Affair; Doctor Zeus; Embracer.

WYONG December 3
Soft 5; Course Proper (Rail out 6 metres)
17 Heats – Heats 1-5 1000m (2 Open; 3 Maiden); Heats 6-17 845m (4 2YO; 2 Open; 5 Maiden)

Three of the four 2YO heats were won by unraced youngsters from the Peter and Paul Snowden team with the standouts being HOWRA  and YITAI SYNERGY . They both led their 845m heats easily and posted good times with something in hand.
However the 2YO I am keen to follow is the Mark Newnham-trained EXCEED THE STARS , who was only sixth when fancied to win the Breeders Plate on debut in September after two early trial wins. His effort to run home under a big hold for third behind Howra was excellent after he came out a clear last, settling five lengths of the winner at the 600m before closing quickly three wide between the 400m and 200m . From there he coasted and was hard to miss as he ran to the line under no pressure. Be assured he’s got the ability.
The best of the open trial winners was the Brad Widdup-trained flier WITHERSPOON , who showed her usual natural speed to record the fastest 845m heat win (50.08; 33.28). She led with ease and cruised over the last 200m to beat the well-performed ARBEITSAM  by almost four lengths while the smart INVINCIBLE QUEST  had an easy time behind them.
Other trials of note in the open heats came from LANCASTER BOMBER , SASSO CORBARO  and HAND FROM ABOVE .
There were some sharp maiden trials including EQUISETA , MARGIE BEE ; VEGADAZE  and SCHNAPPS .
NOTED TRIALS: Hand From Above; Equiesta; Howra; Exceed The Stars; Yitai Synergy; Margie Bee; Marisabel; Vegadaze; Grand Exit; Witherspoon; Invincible Quest; Lancaster Bomber; Sasso Corbaro; Schnapps.
