Australian surfer Julian Wilson will have to wait at least one more day before his tilt at a maiden world title at the season ending Pipe Masters in Hawaii.

World Surf League organisers announced action on Sunday would not commence due to unfavourable winds and messy waves.

"The wind has gone a little more to the north today, so the trade wind is kicking in and messing things up," WSL Commissioner Kieren Perrow said.

"The swell is still OK but we are going to call competition off today."

Event officials will make another call on whether to resume competition on Monday at 0430 AEDT.

World No.2 Wilson sits on 51,450 points, level with Felipe Toledo and just 4750 points behind leader Gabriel Medina, after 11 events.

Wilson would be crowned world champion with a victory at the famous Banzai Pipeline surf break, but second place could also hand him the title if Medina fails to make the semi-finals and Toledo does not win it.
