McKeown medals again at Youth Olympics

Wednesday, 10 October 2018:

Australian swimmer Kaylee McKeown has claimed a third medal on day three of the Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires.

After winning two silver medals on the opening day of competition in the pool, McKeown backed up to pocket bronze in the 200m backstroke on Tuesday night in 2min 10.67sec.

She touched home less than a second behind gold medallist Tatiana Salcutan of Moldova.

"My medal was definitely unexpected. I just wanted to get out there and enjoy the experience and to come away with another medal is really outstanding," McKeown said.

The Australian golfers got off to a flying start, with Karl Vilips joint leader in the men's competition and Grace Kim tied for second in the women's event.

Vilips stormed home with three birdies in his final five holes to card an opening round of one-under 69 at Hurlingham Golf Club.

He was tied for the lead with American Ashkay Bhatia, Thailand's Vanchai Luangnitikul and Italy's Andrea Romano.

Kim carded a one-over 71, bouncing back with birdies on holes 12, 13 and 16 after dropping three shots on the front nine.

Italy's Alessio Nobilio leads by three strokes after the first of three rounds.

The men's Hockey 5s won their third-straight game with a 6-3 defeat of Canada 6-3, while the Australian women's team belted Poland 8-0.
