Daria Gavrilova has pushed world No.8 Karolina Pliskova to three sets but came up just short of an upset at the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo.

Australian Gavrilova got off to a slow start and trailed 4-1 before reeling off five consecutive games to take the set.

But the fourth seed came home strongly in the final two sets to claim a 4-6 6-4 6-4 win that sent her into the quarter-finals.

Other second round winners on Wednesday included US Open champion Naomi Osaka, Caroline Garcia and qualifier Alison Riske - a surprise straight sets winner over two-time grand slam champion and sixth seed Garbine Muguruza.

Seventh seed Ashleigh Barty faces wildcard Victoria Azarenka for a place in the last eight on Thursday.
