American Brandt Snedeker has his sights on the Stonehaven Cup after locking in a berth at the Australian Open in Sydney later this year.

A perennial majors contender and nine-time PGA Tour winner, Snedeker will tee it up at The Lakes Golf Club for the November 15-18 event.

It will be his second crack at the national crown after finishing a joint runner-up, one stroke behind Craig Parry, at The Australian in 2007.

The former world No.4 is coming off another solid season that featured four top-10 finishes and an opening-round 59 on his way to winning the Wyndham Championship last month.

"I've always loved coming down to Australia and I'm really looking forward to spending some time in Sydney around the Open in November," Snedeker said.

"I know how much all the Aussies put into trying to win the Stonehaven Cup and I know it has an incredible honour roll, so I'd love to try to get my name on it, too."

Snedeker boasts nine top-10 finishes in majors, including thirds at the 2008 Masters and 2012 Open.

The 37-year-old will join countryman Matt Kuchar while local hope Cameron Davis defends the crown he won from a field that included Jason Day and 2016 champion Jordan Spieth at The Australian last year.

"Brandt is always a pleasure to be around and has a legion of supporters because of his amiable, smiling nature, so I know there'll be many happy fans with this news, especially given his great recent form," Golf Australia chief executive Stephen Pitt said.
