Kookaburras edge Argentina in one-off test

Sunday, 16 September 2018:

The Kookaburras have warmed up for the Darwin International Hockey Open with a 1-0 victory over Argentina, thanks to a goal by hometown hero Jeremy Hayward.

A serious hit out between the world No.1 Australians and their closest rivals was beneficial for both sides ahead of the DIHO tournament, which gets underway on Tuesday.

The Kookaburras, who handed debuts to Josh Simmonds, Jack Welch and Jacob Anderson, forced penalty corners early in the contest but had to wait until the 32nd minute to beat goalkeeper Juan Vivaldi.

Hayward was on target with a powerful drive after his initial drag flick was blocked.

He almost doubled Australia's lead from another penalty corner but Vivaldi made a sharp save.

Australia open their campaign against Malaysia on day one and then have a rematch with Argentina on Wednesday.

They complete round robin play against Japan on Friday and are eyeing Saturday's final.
