No move yet on Adelaide Comm games bid

Wednesday, 18 April 2018:

It's still too early to say if Adelaide will bid to host the Commonwealth Games in the wake of the success on the Gold Coast, South Australian Premier Steven Marshall says.

The government is thinking about making a bid for the event but will conduct a full evaluation first of the Queensland experience.

"At the moment a lot of people have formed an opinion on whether or not it's a good or bad option for the use of public funds," Mr Marshall said on Wednesday.

"We think it needs a robust evaluation.

"We'll get all the information in on what's happened on the Gold Coast and we'll make a decision on whether it's in the best of the taxpayers' of South Australia.

A commitment to bid for the 2026 games would have to be lodged by the end of this year, with the Commonwealth Games Federation to make a decision in 2019.

The federation recently launched the bid process and called for cities to express their interest for the 2030 and 2034 games as well.

Adelaide previously bid to host the games in 1998 but missed out to Kuala Lumpur.
