Saturday, 20 January 2018: New UCI president David Lappartient is in Adelaide for the Tour Down Under and has met with top local cycling officials

New world cycling boss David Lappartient is enthusiastic about Australia bidding for the 2022 world road cycling championships.

The UCI president is in Adelaide for the Tour Down Under and has met with several key local cycling officials, including Cycling Australia president Steve Bracks.

Geelong hosted a successful worlds in 2010 and plans are afoot to bid for the prestige event again.

The UCI will announce the 2021 worlds host this September, but it appears that CA are more likely to bid for 2022.

"We would be very happy to have the world championships in Australia again," Lappartient said before the start of Saturday's fifth Tour Down Under stage.

"I'm sure this would be possible in the future."

Lappartient added it was up to CA to decide which year and which city will feature in their bid.

The South Australian government will bid to CA for Adelaide to host the worlds.

The bid will cost the host city an estimated $20 million.

It is understood that it will come down to bids from SA and Victoria, with Bracks to meet soon with the SA Government.

"Why not? ... (it) can be a good opportunity, but it's up to Cycling Australia, with the cities, to decide which is the candidate," Lappartient said of a potential Australian bid.

"At UCI level, we will welcome a candidate for 2022."
