Pearson banged up after 100m hurdles win

Saturday, 13 January 2018:

Olympic champion Sally Pearson was banged up but happy after winning the 100m hurdles at the Perth Track Classic on Saturday night.

Pearson won easily with a time of 12.73, and said she was happy with the time considering her knee knocked into the hurdles about three or four times.

"I was warming up really well, so I was expecting a 12.50," Pearson said.

"But I smashed the first hurdle, smashed the fifth hurdle. I was a bit rusty. I don't know how I even came home. Considering all that, it was pretty good.

"My knee got hit quite a few times in that race. That's fine, that's hurdling, I'll probably be bruised tomorrow."

Brianna Beahan finished second with a time of 13.02, but she missed out on an A-qualifier time for the Commonwealth Games by 0.01 of a second.

Earlier in the night, teenage star Jack Hale was left feeling a bit "bummed" after an illegal tail wind meant his fastest 100m sprint couldn't count as an official A-qualifier.

Hale blitzed the men's 100m field at the Perth Track Classic on Saturday night with a personal best time of 10.10.

The 19-year-old was aiming to run a time of 10.15 or better to secure a Commonwealth Games A-qualifier time.

But an illegal tail-wind of 2.1, just 0.1 above the official cut-off, meant Hale's time couldn't count towards qualifying.

"I'm a bit bummed to be so close to a qualifier," Hale said.

"I meant to get the qualifier and, for it to be too windy, it's a bit disappointing. But I've got many more weeks to go.

"It's nice to see a good time.

"I moved to Melbourne with a new coach last year. I'm so happy with how the training block has gone. It's a confidence builder for me going forward over the next month."

Hale's previous fastest time was 10.13, but that was also achieved with an illegal tail-wind.

His quickest official time is 10.21, achieved in 2016 in Germany.

Queenslander Trae Williams finished second in the 100m sprint with a time of 10.21, while WA's Aaron Bresland (10.25) rounded out the top three.
