The world No.12 who was one-under the card early in the round iced his opening nine holes including three straight birdies.
He eventually added another at the par-4 10th before picking up another shot and homing in to sign for a six-under-par 67 at the completion of the day.
Leishman, a two-time winner on the US Tour last year will take a one-shot lead in to the second round over Brian Harman and Jhonattan Vegas at 68 and five under.
American ace Rickie Fowler and Korea's Si Woo Kim share the fourth spot with Dustin Johnson in a six-way tie for the sixth place.
Australian Cameron Smith failed to bring his Australian PGA Championship form into day one and dropped to a two over after a 75.
With a win, a second and another top five in his past five starts worldwide, Leishman's form comes as no surprise in the event.
The tournament fields an elite combination of players including seven of the world’s top 10 golfers.
