The 22-year-old New South Welshman announced his switch after finishing tied 24th in the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship in New Zealand on Sunday.

He'd already planned to join the pro ranks after blitzing the field to win the Northern Territory PGA Championship by six shots at 19 under, with rounds of 64 68 66 and 67, in early September.

Smyth was a quarter-finalist in the US Amateur this year and runner-up at the Australian Amateur in 2016.

He would have stayed an amateur longer if he'd been able to win the Asia-Pacific title because that brings starts in the Masters and British Open the following year.

However, those went to China's Lin Yuxin.

"I was just going after one result this week, really, and that was to win. And if I didn't win, I'm turning pro," Smyth told Golf Australia.

"I was fortunate enough to win the NT PGA. I was going to play the Aussie summer as an amateur. Now I can play it as a pro."
