Question mark over Bright at Winter Games

Friday, 20 October 2017:

A question mark remains over the status of Australia's greatest Winter Olympian, with Games officials admitting they have no idea whether Torah Bright intends to compete in South Korea.

Snowboarder Bright, a gold and silver medal winner in the halfpipe, had initially indicated that the 2018 Games were on her radar.

But the 30 year-old has rarely competed since coming second in Sochi three years ago and is now considered unlikely to take part given her lack of preparation.

The Games are less than four months away.

"Still no advice from Torah, whether she is going to participate or not," Australian chef de mission Ian Chesterman said.

"I think it is up to her. If she wants to participate we'll welcome her with open arms.

"But the reality is she hasn't competed for two years or more so she's going to have to reveal herself at the next World Cup to say 'I'm going to try to make it to another Games'."

Bright has competed at three Games and is equal on medals with moguls skier Dale Begg-Smith but also has another top-five Olympic performance on her resume.

Meanwhile Chesterman said he was comfortable with the security situation in South Korea despite the country's increasingly strained relationship with the north.

"We're going into a lot less stressful environment than it was going into Sochi," Chesterman said of the 2014 Winter Olympics.

"That was our highest concern in terms of security because of the uncertainty of that domestic environment because you did have terrorists in action in the lead-up to those Games - terrorism was a real threat.

"Our advice is that's not an issue that's alive in South Korea."

He said the AOC would continue to take advice from DFAT, the IOC, the South Korean government and the Australian Federal Police.

Speaking after the team uniform launch on Friday, Chesterman also confirmed that figure skater Ekaterina Alexandrovskaya received Australian citizenship on Monday and would be eligible to compete for her adopted country.

Alexandrovskaya paired with Harley Windsor and won the world junior championship earlier this year before sealing a Pyeongchang qualifying spot for Australia late last month.

They would now seem like the obvious pairing to be nominated for Australia for the Games.

There was no official announcement in regards to Alexandrovskaya's expedited citizenship, the AOC perhaps burned by the 2010 experience with Tatiana Borodulina.

The short track speed skater had her citizenship expedited amidst much fanfare but it was later revealed she'd been suspended while competing for Russia because of missed drugs tests.

She performed poorly at the 2010 Games for Australia and then returned to compete for Russia at the Sochi Games four years later.
