McGovern suffered the injury last Saturday in a training session.
Adelaide are forced to make at least two changes to the lineup with defender Brodie Smith also sidelined with severe knee injury.
Deputy Rory Sloane is confirmed to return after appendix surgery with either Andy Otten or Wayne Milera lined up to replace McGovern.
According to Pyke, although McGovern will be struggling this weekend he will be a contender for the following week.
Also, according to Pyke, McGovern has made good recovery from Saturday and if he is up to the task he will be given a chance to play even this week.
Pyke was of the opinion that getting the right balance and the blend of the team is important with the remaining team members against a side like Geelong who are touted to possess a strong arsenal of strengths and abilities.
