Sunday, 17 September 2017: The Wallabies say South Africa will be out to make amends after they were humbled by New Zealand 57-0 when they meet in Bloemfontein next month.

The Wallabies are bracing to face a backlash from an embarrassed Springboks outfit after their record loss to New Zealand.

The Springboks were pummelled by the world champions, who ran in eight tries in a 57-0 rout in Auckland on Saturday night.

Australia travel to Bloemfontein for their next Rugby Championship clash on October 1 and coach Michael Cheika said he was expecting South Africa to bent on securing some redemption.

Cheika hadn't yet watched the game but admitted he thought the Springboks, who held the Wallabies to a 23-23 draw a week earlier, would do better against the All Blacks.

"It was pretty interesting because I thought South Africa would go there and perform but no-one knows better than us how the game can get away from you against New Zealand," said Cheika, referring to Australia's opening Rugby Championship match when they trailed 54-6 before an eventual 54-34 loss.

"What I do know is that when we get to the high veldt it's going to be on.

"They're going to be looking for some retribution on someone and it's most likely going to be us. We've got to be ready for that."

The Wallabies had their first win of the tournament with an impressive second half securing a 45-20 win over Argentina in Canberra. They crossed for three tries in the final eight minutes.

The Pumas led 13-10 at halftime and Cheika said his team couldn't afford to give South Africa a start.

Last year at Pretoria's Loftus Versfeld the Wallabies dominated territory and possession in the second half but couldn't score and were forced to settle for an 18-10 loss.
