Filipe Toledo made it a Brazilian double at Lower Trestles in California, taking out the men's title after Silvana Lima won the women's event.

After starting his day with a quarter-final win over young American Kanoa Igarashi, Toledo knocked off reigning world champion John John Florence in the semi-finals, making sure of the victory on his last wave.

Then came the final against South Africa's tour-leading surfer Jordy Smith, who was also the defending champion at Trestles.

What made it even sweeter for the world No.7 was the fact Toledo had never won the event before.

"Finally," Toledo said.

"It's a really special moment, an incredible feeling."

Australia's Sally Fitzgibbons could relate to that based on results earlier in the women's competition.

Although she lost in Thursday's quarter-finals, staying at world No.1 relied on how fellow Australian Keely Andrew handled her semi-final with world No.2 Courtney Conlogue.

It was a see-saw heat in which both women made mistakes, but with under two minutes left, the 22-year-old Andrew powered out an 8-pointer that turned the heat, and took her to the final.

There Lima was waiting, trying to secure her first championship tour win since 2010.

"I just had to believe in God, he knows you, he knows your time and I was just waiting, but this is my time," Lima said after her 17.60 winning score to Andrew's 10.93.

Later, in slightly smaller conditions Toledo put down an early 8.0, ripping some strong left-handed turns for an 8.0 after Smith had put down a 9.0 riding a right-hander with a lip float and two big carving turns.

Then, with the swell disappearing Toledo put down another 7.67, while Smith could only get one more wave for a minor score.

The win is Toledo's second of the season, having already taken out the title at Jeffreys Bay in South Africa.

Smith earlier beat Australia's Adrian Buchan in the semi-finals and remains in possession of the yellow jersey with three events remaining for the season.
